Point 2
Please Note! We recommend calling each
facility before coming to make sure it is open, and to make sure you can get a spot. This
is not a complete list of all parks in the area, just the ones closest to our tour loops.
Quarry Park on the North Fork River
- This is a large beautiful 71 site RV and camping park maintained by the Army Corps of
Engineers. All drives and sites are paved. Several sites are on the river bank. Electric
and non-electric campsites, dump station, playground with playsets, bathrooms, pavilions,
picnic tables. A good boat launch allows boat access to the North Fork River. You can bank
fish here, as well as along the park river bank. Right across the highway is America's
largest trout hatchery, the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, open to the public for
self-guided tours. Next to the hatchery is Dry Run Creek, perhaps the best place in
America to take your child trout fishing. Norfork Lake access is 1/4 mile away at upper
Quarry Park which has swimming, public boat launch, bathroom, pavilion, playground with
volleyball and a playset. You can rent river boats at nearby trout docks. On Hwy 177 at
the base of Norfork Lake dam, in Salesville, Arkansas.
Gatehouse - A small gatehouse is
just inside the park entrance. From April 1st through September 15th it is staffed
Thursdays through Mondays from 10am to 6pm. Volunteers may staff it at other times.
Leaping Trout - At Quarry Park is
something that occurs in very few other places around the world. During October and
November you can watch rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout leap the Dry Run Creek
waterfall. You can get right up close, even hear them slap into the rocks when they miss
the water. Small crowds gather to cheer the trout on as it is an intense struggle for
them. Leaping Trout Photos
Making Reservations - You can
place reservations from May 15 to September 15 as far as six months in advance. The rest
of the year a stay in the Park is on a first-come-first-served basis. In this area COE
parks typically officially open from April 1st to September 15th. You can camp in the
parks the rest of the year, but services are not turned on, and staff is not on site.
For reservations at Quarry Park you'll need to call
Recreation.gov, or sign in to their web site. When using the Recreation.gov site use the
name Dam Quarry on Norfork Lake in their search box. Be prepared for the reservation
agents to know very little about the park since they've never been there. f you have
specific questions you'll need to call the local U.S. Army Crops of Engineers Project
Office in Mountain Home, Arkansas.
It is always a good idea to call the Mountain Home office before you
leave home. Sometimes the parks are closed, or partly closed, due to high water.
The Recreation.gov site has a good online site-by-site reservation
system with a very nice set of clickable features showing details for each site. There is
also a good park map so you can see which sites are open for the dates you want. The map
is helpful even if you don't want to make reservations.
Mountain Home COE office: 870-425-2700 8am to 4:30pm Monday-Friday.
