Things To Do On Fisherman Street

Fisherman Street is a hairpin turn to the right just after the bridge, right next to the Wolf Settlement. (If you took CR 63 down from Whispering Woods Resort, this is where you come out.) Fisherman Street takes you down to Woodsman's Liquor store, Woodsman's convenience store, Rose Trout Dock, the public access to the rivers, and Norfork Resort and Trout Dock.

Please Note: The lower section of Fisherman Street may show up on some maps as either CR-63 or Norfork River Road.  Historically speaking the road was CR 63 long before Fisherman Street was built. Fisherman Street is just a little over two-tenths of a mile long.

Historical Note: Back in the mid 1800's steamboats stopped here delivering all sorts of supplies. For many years before the bridge was built, there were two ferry services here, one for crossing the White River, the other for crossing the North Fork River. Where the current public boat launch ramp is today was known as Norfork Landing and Martin's ferry operated from here to the ramp you see across the river. The second ferry service, South's Ferry, went across the North Fork river about 200 yards upstream from the launch. Sheid's Bridge one-half mile upstream spans the White River, and the Norfork Bridge you crossed replaced South's Ferry.

Go down to the river, then look back up at the Wolf Settlement, which was built in 1829. Can you imagine oxen pulling carts of supplies up this road from a steamboat?

Woodsman's Liquor Store - The rock front store is Woodsman's new liquor store. This used to be where Woodsman's convenience store was. In September of 2011 Woodsman's moved the convenience store next door in what used to be their rental cabins. There's an amazing collection of local hunting and fishing photos on the wall inside the door. Woodsman's Package Store open Monday thru Thursday 8am to 9pm, open Friday and Saturday 8am to 10pm, Sundays 10am to 9pm.

Woodsman's Sports Shop - This is another independent operation long a favorite with fishermen, hunters, and tourists. You can buy fishing licenses and bait/tackle as well as snacks and basic groceries. There are also quite a few hunting and fishing supplies, as well as a banking ATM. Rose Trout Dock - After you cross the railroad tracks make a hairpin turn onto CR-63 (aka Norfork River Road) and you come to Rose Trout Dock. Rent a boat to explore the White or Norfork River, or for trout fishing. Or hire a guide to either trout fish or site see. Rose Trout Dock also conducts overnight camping fishing trips. Public River Access - Drive across the railroad tracks and go about 100 feet straight ahead. On your left is the parking lot for the public fishing access. Down the road a hundred feet or so you come to the river bank, which is usually a flat gravel bar. You can fish here, and there are a lot of trout. This is where the Norfork River flows into the White River. Another 50 yards down the road you come to the hard-surfaced boat launch. There is a special hoist here for lifting wheel chairs in and out of boats.

Norfork Resort & Trout Dock - Drive to the very end of CR-63 and you'll run into the parking spot for Norfork Trout Dock, which is the cabin floating on the water. All around it are river rental boats. This is another excellent place to rent river boats or to hire river guides. The resort is accessed by driving through the public parking at River Meadows Drive. These two facilities are within 200 feet of each other, and technically are on the same property.

Trout Bank Fishing - All you need is a fishing rod. You can buy bait, tackle, and licenses at Woodsman's.

Boat Trout Fishing - Rent a boat from Rose's or Norfork Trout Dock. They'll show you how to run the boat safely, it's not hard.

Guided Fishing - No Experience Needed - When you hire a guide you get the boat, rods, tackle, and bait. The guides bait your hook, net your fish, take the fish off the hook for you, and show you how to catch trout.

Things To Do On Hwy 5

Gas Stations - There are no gasoline stations in Norfork Village, but you can buy gasoline at Hughes Store 1.3 miles further down Hwy 5 at Point 5.

Two Rivers Fly Shop & BBQ Cafe - If you are a fly fisher you can get what you need across the road at Two Rivers Fly Shop, including experienced fly fishing advice. Two Rivers Hickory Pig Cafe is well named. This is a small family restaurant specializing in baby back ribs and other local BBQ delights. You can also get a cold beer here. Open 7 days a week. Historical Wolf Settlement - The Wolf House, built in 1829 by the Indian Agent Jacob Wolf, is a fascinating look at history. Stop and read the interpretive plagues. The Wolf House was also the area's first court house. It is the oldest standing house in Arkansas. Around it are several other historical log buildings from the same era. If you enjoy historical sites it is worth your time to stop at the Wolf House, as did Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and many other famous pioneers. Right below the Wolf House on the river was the steamboat stop. In addition to the Wolf House there's a blacksmith shop, an authentic log cabin, and a log cabin store. A parking lot with a view point boardwalk is on the opposite side of the log cabin store. Unless there is a special event going on the buildings are closed. You can walk around and read the interpretive signs. There are no fees.
