What Is It Like? - Rand runs
mostly through thick hardwood forest, but there are some open views. It is wider than some
back country roads and makes a nice drive any time of the year.
Hiking, Birding, Walking, ATV Use - This
is the southern border of the Leatherwood Wilderness Area. Heading down Rand Road
everything on your left is in the Ozark National Forest. Everything on your right is in
the Leatherwood Wilderness Area. Knowing the difference is important because any motorized
or mechanical vehicle - like mountain bikes, ATVs, or trucks - are NOT allowed in the
Leatherwood. Only horse and foot traffic are allowed in the Leatherwood. You CAN use
motorized and mechanical vehicles in the National Forest.
There are several old logging roads
branching off Rand Road, and all of them are dead ends. Rand
Road is about 9 miles long. About 6.6 miles
down Rand you come to a "T" intersection with FSR 1111 (aka Spring Creek Road).
Some maps show Rand continuing on to a dead end at private property, other maps show Rand
ending here, and FSR1111 is what dead-ends at the private property. Turn left and you come
to the OHT Spring Creek Trailhead in a half-mile. Turn right and in about 2.5 miles you
come to private property at a sign reading "Caney Mountain Horse Camp." Turn
around here because going further puts you on posted private property. Caney is a private
operation. While catering primarily to horse riders, they do rent campsites and rooms on a
nightly basis.
