Blanchard Springs Caverns Aerial Photo

Photo 1 - Aerial Photo of Blanchard Springs Caverns Recreation Complex

Surrounding Ozark uplands dwarf the hilltop parking lot of Blanchard
Springs. You'd never guess that under this tree-covered hill is one of
America's largest cave systems. Look closely and you can see the
road coming in to Blanchard from the highway. The road runs all the way
down to the above-ground  recreation complex. Mirror Lake is in the
shadow photo left at the bottom of the parking lot hill. North Sylamore
Creek is that shiny thing twisting through the valley. All along the creek
are camp sites.

North Sylamore Creek forms a perfect "W" as it wraps around hill bases
just south of Blanchard Springs. The bright gray spots are large buffs.
Taken in the fall after leaves were off the trees, this photo also clearly
shows the mixture of pine and hardwood forests common in the Ozarks.

The swimming beach and bathhouse at Blanchard Springs Caverns. Not
quite what you'd expect from a place with "caverns" in it's name, which is
why the actual name is Blanchard Springs Caverns Recreation Complex.
The boomerang- shaped beach wraps around behind the tree. Look
closely in photo right and you'll see people wading in the creek. This
photo was taken from 4,000 feet with an extreme telephoto lens. The only
time of day to make this photo is early evening. During the day sunlight
intensely reflects off the water surface making the photo unusable.

Here's Mirror Lake tightly nestled between two hills. You can see the
access road running through the hill shadow. Mirror lake is the outflow
from deep within Blanchard Springs Caverns. You can see the narrow
creek channel that widens at the dam.
