Making hill country aerial photos works best either early in the morning or
in early evening when the sun is low on the horizon. Low angle light
creates shadows in the ridge hollows which helps define the land
formations. These shadows do not occur in mid-day light.

The best photos are made with the sun behind us. In low angle light the
sunlight streams brightly through the airplane windows. The glass acts
like a magnifying glass concentrating the intense light below on the
ground. It takes some patience and a good pilot to get the focal length
and bright spot location just right.

This is Green Mountain Road in the Experimental Forest Area. Next to
this dirt road you can see a power line cut. No longer in use, the power
line runs to the old experimental station, now long shut down. The small
white things at the top of the road are the old station buildings.

This food plot has an unusual shape so it's easily spotted from the air. We
used it many times from many angles to keep track of where we were. It
is on Branscum Road which runs through the center of the Experimental
Forest. (Branscum Road is closed to vehicle traffic.) You can see a band
of trees running through this food plot. Branscum runs through these
trees. You can't see Branscum Road, even with the bright light on it. This
is because trees line the road and branches hide it from aerial view.
