The road into Gunner Pool Recreation Area is the best maintained of
all back country roads. It's a great road for a scenic drive any time of the
year.

From the campground side of Gunner Pool cross the bridge and
follow the road uphill. You'll soon come to an area of open forest floor.
This is the Sandstone Hollow Special Interest Area. It's a stretch of
forest where controlled burns and other methods keep the understory
open. This is a very good spot for enjoying dogwood blooms in the
spring and understory fall foliage.

Winter in the Sylamore is beautiful, but unless you have 4-wheel drive
you'll get stuck in snow and mud. This is not fun in the steep, narrow
spots in the road!
